Watertown sits where Connecticut starts to go quiet. You feel it on the way in. The roads narrow, the hills come up, and the Litchfield Hills open out ahead of you.

Black Rock State Park is the reason to make the trip. There's a rock face with long views out over Thomaston, Watertown, and Waterbury, and a pond ringed with hemlock, pine, and oak. In October it's one of the best fall spots in the state and nowhere near as busy as it deserves to be.

In town it's a different feeling entirely. The green in the center was laid out in 1772 and still looks the part. Oakville, down in the southeast corner, has the brick and texture of an old mill village. Three completely different moods, none of them more than ten minutes apart.

Worth Planning Around

  • Black Rock State Park: The best reason to shoot in Watertown. A rock face with sweeping views over the Naugatuck Valley, a pond ringed in hemlock and pine, and three marked scenic viewpoints along the trails. Dramatic in a way almost nothing else in the state is, and unreal in mid October.
  • Watertown Town Green: The center green was laid out in 1772 and sits inside the Watertown Center Historic District. White clapboard, old trees, and clean New England lines. Classic and easy, and it never looks dated in five years.
  • Oakville: Technically part of Watertown and actually the larger of the two communities. Old mill village brick and texture, and the moodiest option in town. Pick this if a field is not your thing.
  • The Taft School Campus: Stone, ivy, and manicured grounds on a hundred-plus acre campus. The most editorial and academic backdrop in Watertown, and especially meaningful if you're a Taft senior finishing up here. It's private property, so we'd need the school's permission first.
  • Mattatuck State Forest and the Litchfield Hills: Black Rock adjoins Mattatuck, and the whole area opens into rolling hills and back roads. If you want space, distance, and the feeling of being genuinely out of town, this is it.

Where are the best places for senior photos in Watertown?

And the Taft campus is the most editorial spot in town if we can arrange access.
Do you photograph seniors from Watertown High and The Taft School?
Both. Watertown Warriors are welcome, and so are Taft seniors. Taft draws students from all over the country and abroad, so I am used to working around families flying in and narrow visiting windows. If your schedule is tight or you are only in Connecticut for a few days, tell me the dates and I will build the session around them.
Can we shoot on the Taft campus?
Possibly, but it depends on the school. Taft is private property and campus policies change year to year, so we would need permission before we shoot there. If campus photos matter to you, start by asking the school and I will work with whatever they say. Worth knowing that most of my favorite senior images happen off campus anyway, where you are not surrounded by people you know.
Do you travel to Watertown for senior sessions?
Yes. My studio is in North Haven, about an hour from Watertown, and I photograph throughout the Litchfield Hills. A travel fee applies for locations this far out, and I will include it clearly in your quote so nothing is a surprise later. Because it is a longer trip, I would rather build one really good session around the right light than rush two half sessions.
When should Watertown seniors book their session?
Most Connecticut seniors shoot the summer before senior year or in early fall, which lines up with yearbook deadlines. For Watertown I would aim squarely at October. The Litchfield Hills get better fall color than anywhere else in the state and Black Rock is at its absolute best then. Those dates go first, so reach out three to four months ahead.
How long is a session and when do I get my photos?
Sessions run about 60 to 90 minutes, enough for two or three outfits and usually two locations. Watertown's spots sit close enough together that we can do the park and the green in one evening. Your gallery arrives within two to three weeks, private and online, with high resolution downloads and full print rights.
What happens if it rains?
We reschedule, no charge. Because Watertown is an hour out I keep a close eye on the forecast and reach out a few days ahead rather than leaving it to the morning of. Overcast is actually great for portraits, soft light and no squinting, so I only move a date for real rain. If we are up against a deadline, the North Haven studio is always available instead.
