October Light
Madison in October is the reason I keep driving down here. The summer crowds are gone, the water goes steel blue, and the light comes off the Sound low and warm in a way it simply does not in July.
Hammonasset is two miles of beach, dunes, boardwalk, and salt marsh, and every stretch of it looks different. Walk fifteen minutes east to Meigs Point and the sand turns to boulders and rocky shoreline, which is a completely different mood in the same session. Bauer Park is five minutes inland with open fields and stone walls if you want warmth instead of wind.
That is the whole appeal of a Madison session. Beach, rocks, and open field in one evening, and none of it looks like anywhere else in Connecticut.
Welcome! Ten years in, senior sessions are the part of this job I look forward to most. You're old enough to have real opinions about how you want to look, which turns the whole thing into a collaboration instead of a shoot.

Where To Shoot
In Madison
- Hammonasset Beach State Park: Two miles of sand, dunes, boardwalk, and salt marsh. The most requested senior spot on the shoreline, and for good reason. An hour before sunset in September or October is unbeatable, and the crowds are long gone by then.
- Meigs Point: The rocky eastern end of Hammonasset, all boulders and open water. Fifteen minutes' walk from the sand and a completely different mood. My pick if you want something moodier and more dramatic than a beach photo.
- Bauer Park: Open fields, stone walls, and farm buildings five minutes inland. Warm and golden rather than windy and blue. Great as the second half of a session when you want variety without a drive.
- Rockland Preserve: Woods, trails, and real October color. The quiet option, and the one nobody thinks of. Good if beach photos are not your thing at all.
- Madison Town Green and Boston Post Road: White clapboard, old trees, and the village stretch past R.J. Julia. Classic New England and easy to combine with anything else on this list.
