I believe in the beauty of natural settings, which is why I often shoot in the comfort of your own home or amidst the serene outdoors. Let’s embark on this journey together.

I can’t wait to hear from you! I’m here to create timeless, high-quality photos that capture your story
Nicole Mele is among Connecticut’s best milestone photographers, documenting the little chapters of babies and toddlers’ first years — sitter sessions, standing sessions, cake smashes, and first birthday portraits — at The Studio at 100 in North Haven and at outdoor Connecticut locations. Milestone sessions are available for babies from three months through the first birthday and beyond.
They grow so fast everyone says it. The only way to actually hold onto it is to photograph it.
Most families photograph their newborn. Many photograph their one-year birthday. Far fewer document what happens in between — and those who skip the middle miss some of the most remarkable physical and emotional transformation of a baby’s entire life.
In twelve months, a newborn who could not hold their head up becomes a toddler who is trying to run. A baby who had no opinions becomes a small person with an enormous personality. The changes that happen at three months, six months, and nine months are as dramatic as anything that happens in childhood — and they are completely invisible if no one photographs them.
As I say about every milestone session: “Before you know it, those quiet newborn days give way to bright belly laughs, wobbly first steps…” A milestone package is how you stop time in the middle of all of that change and actually see what your baby looks like right now.
Milestone sessions are short, focused portrait sessions designed around the specific stage a baby is at. Each developmental stage has its own beauty and its own distinct look — and each one is temporary.
The sessions I recommend for the first year:
Three-month session (Sitter-prep): Baby is alert, responsive, smiling. They hold their head steady. They track your face. They make eye contact that makes everyone in the room feel like the only person in the world. This stage is so full and it passes so fast. Three-month sessions capture the wide-eyed, curious quality of early infancy before it shifts into something new.
Six to seven-month session (Sitter session): Baby can sit independently — or nearly so. They are interactive, bouncy, opinionated. They laugh loudly and often. Sitting sessions capture the playful, full-personality quality of mid-infancy — the stage that everyone who has had a baby remembers as the golden one.
Nine to ten-month session (Standing session): Baby is pulling up, cruising, maybe taking first steps. They are mobile and curious and relentlessly interested in the world. This stage captures the transition from baby to toddler — the last stage before the first birthday changes everything.
First birthday / cake smash: The milestone everyone knows about — the cake, the face full of frosting, the pure bewildered joy of a baby experiencing sugar for the first time. Cake smash sessions are a celebration, and they produce some of the most fun and emotional photographs of the entire first year.
Nicole Mele’s Milestone Photography Sessions in Connecticut
The Studio at 100 at 100 Broadway in North Haven is the primary location for milestone sessions, particularly for the studio-specific work like cake smash setups and younger babies who need the controlled warmth and quiet of an indoor environment.
The studio is bright and naturally lit, with a clean, warm quality that makes babies — and their expressions — the clear focus of every frame. I set up each milestone session with a specific backdrop and prop selection based on the baby’s stage and the family’s style preferences. Nothing trendy, nothing loud — everything chosen to let the baby shine and to produce images that look as beautiful in twenty years as they do today.
Cake smash setups at the studio typically include a simple birthday cake, a backdrop chosen with the family, and a post-cake-smash bath setup (because cake gets everywhere, and that is part of the fun).
Not every milestone session needs to happen in the studio. Some of my favorite milestone work happens outdoors — in open fields, in parks, at the shoreline — where the backdrop and the light create something the studio simply cannot replicate.
Outdoor milestone sessions work best for babies who are sitting or standing independently (six months and older) and for first-birthday sessions that do not involve cake smash setups. They are a beautiful option for families who want a more natural, lifestyle feel for their milestone portraits.
I photograph outdoor milestone sessions throughout Connecticut — in New Haven, North Haven, Wallingford, Hartford, and across the state. Seasonal options include fall foliage in October, spring green in May and June, and shoreline sessions in summer.
Many families choose to document multiple milestone stages together as a cohesive series — a first-year package that includes sessions at three months, six to seven months, nine to ten months, and the first birthday.
A first-year package produces something extraordinary: a visual record of the single fastest year of your baby’s life, captured at each major stage. When you look at those four galleries together — the sleepy, alert three-month-old, the laughing sitter, the cruising almost-toddler, the birthday baby covered in frosting — you see the whole story of a year that otherwise would have blurred by.
I offer first-year milestone packages for Connecticut families. Contact me for current package pricing and availability.
Many of my milestone clients are families I have already photographed — for a maternity session during pregnancy, for a newborn session in the first two weeks, and now continuing through the first year.
When I already know a family — when a baby has literally grown up in my studio — there is a comfort and a trust in the session that shows in every photograph. The baby is not nervous around me. The parents are relaxed. The images have a quality of ease that comes from relationship, not from setup.
That continuity is exactly what I am building toward with every family I photograph.
Milestone sessions are short compared to full family sessions — typically 30 to 60 minutes depending on the stage and the baby. But within that time, I do not rush. Babies this age have limited windows of good mood, and the entire session depends on being in that window.
I schedule milestone sessions at the time of day that works best for the specific baby — after the morning nap for most, later in the day for others. Parents know their baby’s schedule better than anyone, and I build around it.
As with every session involving babies, I follow the baby’s lead completely. If a three-month-old needs a feeding break in the middle of the session, we pause. If a six-month-old is done with the main setup and just wants to roll around on the blanket, we go with that — because those unscripted moments are often the best photographs of the session.
Milestone sessions are primarily focused on the baby, but parents and siblings are always welcome in the frame. Some of the most meaningful milestone images are not the baby alone — they are the baby with mom, or looking up at dad, or trying to touch an older sibling’s face.
I build time for family moments into every milestone session, because the baby does not exist alone. They exist in a family — and the photographs should show that.
My longest-term client relationships started with milestone sessions. Samantha Gerakelis has been photographing with me for over five years — through milestones, through family sessions, through all the stages that follow that first year. In her words: “We’ve been working with Nicole for over five years, and every year she continues to capture our family…”
That is exactly what I want for every family I photograph. Not a single great session — a relationship that documents the whole story.
The families I love most are the ones I have watched grow up through photographs. Babies I photographed at three months who are now school-aged. Families who have added a second or third child since I first photographed them. Watching those galleries accumulate over years is one of the great privileges of this work.
I have been photographing Connecticut families for 10+ years, have been featured in People magazine and on Live with Kelly and Mark for my viral blizzard wedding story, and serve families across New Haven County, Hartford County, and Fairfield County. That background shapes every milestone session I photograph — I bring a level of care, skill, and genuine investment in each family’s story that comes from years of building this work into something that actually matters.
Based in North Haven, I photograph milestone sessions throughout New Haven County — North Haven, New Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, Cheshire, East Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Milford, and West Haven. The Studio at 100 serves families across the county as an easy, centrally located indoor option.
I serve milestone clients across Hartford County — including West Hartford, Glastonbury, Simsbury, and Wethersfield — and Fairfield County, including Greenwich, Westport, Norwalk, Fairfield, Darien, and Stamford. Travel for outdoor milestone sessions and in-studio sessions is available statewide.
Milestone sessions are short portrait sessions that document specific developmental stages of a baby’s first year. Nicole photographs milestone sessions at three months (early alertness), six to seven months (sitting), nine to ten months (standing/cruising), and the first birthday (including cake smash). Together, these sessions create a complete visual record of the fastest year of your child’s life.
A cake smash session is a first birthday portrait session centered around a baby experiencing their first cake. Nicole sets up a simple birthday cake with a backdrop at The Studio at 100 in North Haven. The session captures the baby’s reaction to the cake — the exploration, the delight, the inevitable mess — plus family portraits and clean portraits before the cake arrives. Book cake smash sessions at least 4–6 weeks before your baby’s birthday.
Nicole offers milestone sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven, CT — a bright, naturally lit indoor studio — and at outdoor Connecticut locations including state parks, open fields, and the CT shoreline. Studio sessions are recommended for younger babies and cake smash setups. Outdoor sessions work well for babies six months and older.
A first-year package is the most complete option — it documents every major stage and produces a cohesive series of galleries that tell the full story of your baby’s first twelve months. Individual sessions are a great option for families who are not sure how many stages they want to document, or who want to start with one session and decide about additional sessions after. Contact Nicole to discuss which approach makes sense for your family.
Nicole photographs the full journey — maternity, newborn, milestones, family sessions, seniors, and beyond. Many of her milestone clients started with a newborn session and continue through the first year and into annual family sessions. The long-term relationship she builds with Connecticut families means sessions build on each other over time, producing a documentary record of your family’s story rather than a collection of isolated photographs.
This year will be over before you can believe it. The photographs are how you keep it.
