For most senior portrait sessions in Connecticut, bring two to three outfits. Two outfits give your gallery variety without rushing any single look. Three outfits work well for 60-minute sessions with time to spare. More than three outfits in a standard session creates time pressure that shows up in the images.
That is the short answer. Here is the reasoning behind it.
One outfit limits the gallery in a specific way: every image from the session shares the same look. There is nothing wrong with that if the senior is very intentional about a single outfit. But for most seniors, a second look gives the gallery range, and range gives you more options when it comes to what to print, share, and display.
A second outfit does not have to be dramatically different. One casual and one slightly elevated option is all it takes to give the gallery a complete feel. The goal is variety in the story the images tell, not variety for its own sake.
Senior portrait sessions typically run 30 to 60 minutes. Each outfit change takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes in practice, accounting for walking to a change space, changing, and settling into the new look.
Four or five outfits in a 60-minute session means spending roughly 30 of those minutes on transitions. That leaves very little actual shooting time per look, which means fewer settled, natural images in each outfit.
The sessions that produce the best galleries are the ones where the senior has enough time to relax into each look. Relaxed takes real time. Cycling through outfits quickly produces images that look exactly like what they are: rushed.
The most reliable combination for most seniors is one casual, personal look and one slightly elevated look.
The casual look tends to produce the most natural images because the senior is comfortable. A favorite pair of jeans with a simple top. A dress they have worn a dozen times. Something that feels like them on a regular day. These images often end up as the favorites in the gallery because they look genuinely like the person.
The elevated look gives the gallery something with a little more intention. Not formal, just polished. A wrap dress, a blazer with trousers, a clean button-down. Something that reads a step above everyday without looking like a costume.
If the senior has three outfits in mind and the session is 60 minutes, that works. The key is that all three feel genuinely like the senior, and that each one leaves enough time for real, settled images.
Match Your Outfits to Your Location
Location matters when deciding between outfit options.
For outdoor sessions at Connecticut parks and trails like East Rock Park in New Haven, practical footwear matters as much as the outfit itself. A great look on a muddy trail in impractical shoes creates visible stress that shows up in images. Think about what you are walking through, not just what you look like standing still.
For shoreline sessions along the Connecticut coast, relaxed and flowing pieces tend to look and feel most natural. Heavy or structured outfits at the beach read out of place.
For studio sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven, cleaner and slightly more polished silhouettes tend to photograph most crisply against the controlled studio backdrop.

How many outfits should you bring to a senior photo session?
Bring two to three outfits for a standard 30-to-60-minute senior portrait session in Connecticut. Two outfits give your gallery variety without rushing any single look. Three works well for longer sessions. More than three in a standard session creates time pressure that shows up in the images.
Can you change outfits during a senior portrait session?
Yes. Most senior portrait sessions in Connecticut include time for outfit changes between setups. At The Studio at 100 in North Haven, changes happen quickly indoors. For outdoor sessions, changes typically happen in a nearby restroom or in the car. Plan for each change to take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Does bringing more outfits affect the session cost?
For a standard 30-to-60-minute session, no. Most packages in Connecticut accommodate 2 to 3 outfit changes without any additional fee. If a senior wants significantly more time or changes than a standard session allows, a longer session block may be needed. Ask your photographer before booking.
What is the best outfit combination for senior portraits?
One casual, personal-style look and one slightly elevated option. The casual look captures authentic personality. The elevated look provides images that work well for announcements, wall art, and more formal contexts. What if my senior wants to bring an athletic jersey or sport-specific outfit?
That is a great choice for one of two or three outfits. Athletes especially tend to look completely natural in sport-specific images because they immediately relax into something familiar. Pair it with something slightly more elevated as a second look so the gallery has range. For more on incorporating personal interests into senior sessions, see the complete senior portrait guide.
