I believe in the beauty of natural settings, which is why I often shoot in the comfort of your own home or amidst the serene outdoors. Let’s embark on this journey together.

I can’t wait to hear from you! I’m here to create timeless, high-quality photos that capture your story
Nicole Mele is among Connecticut’s best family photographers, documenting more than 100 Connecticut families at outdoor locations across New Haven, Hartford, and Fairfield Counties — from Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden to the Connecticut shoreline. Sessions are available at The Studio at 100 in North Haven or on-location anywhere in Connecticut, in every season.
Real families. Real moments. Photographs that look like your actual life, not a staged version of it.
Most families come to a session with a mental image of what family photos are supposed to look like: everyone in matching outfits, facing the camera, smiling on cue. And most families leave that kind of session with photographs that look technically correct — and feel completely wrong.
That is not what I do.
As I say about every family session: “Family sessions are designed to be a breath of fresh air in a world of ‘perfect’ social media grids.” The photographs I am after are the ones that look like Tuesday evening in your house — the real laughs, the kids who won’t hold still, the parents who forgot to look at the camera because they were too busy watching their kids. That is where the real photographs live.
I have been a lifestyle photographer for 10+ years, and I have photographed more than 100 Connecticut families in that time. What I know after all of those sessions is this: the families who relax and stop trying to perform for the camera are the ones who end up with galleries they cannot believe are real photographs of themselves.
I am a wife and a mom to two girls. My house is loud, chaotic, and full of love — and three dogs. I say that because it is important: I am not a photographer who stands apart from family life and observes it. I live it. I know what it looks like when a toddler decides they are done cooperating. I know what real family connection looks like — and I know how to capture it even when everything is a little bit messy.
My entire approach to family sessions is built around creating the conditions for real moments to happen, and then being in the right place when they do. I give gentle direction — where to stand, which way to face, how to interact — and then I watch for the in-between moments. Those are always the photographs that matter.
A typical family session with me runs 60 to 90 minutes. We start with a quick hello — I want the kids to know who I am before I put a camera in their face — and then we start moving through the location together. I do not set people up and shoot from a distance. I am close, engaged, and moving with you.
I keep sessions light. I make the kids laugh (usually by being a little ridiculous). I give parents small moments together while the kids run. I am watching for everything at once — the light, the expressions, the quiet moments that happen when no one is paying attention to the camera.
By the end of every session, families tell me they did not realize how fun it was going to be. That is always the goal.
Every family session includes individual portraits of each family member — the kids alone, the parents together, siblings together. These are some of the most important photographs in the gallery.
Parents often forget to be in photographs. They are usually the ones holding the camera. A family session is one of the few times they are in the frame — and those portraits of you with your kids, or just the two of you together, are the ones your children will keep for the rest of their lives.
Connecticut is genuinely beautiful in every season, and I photograph family sessions year-round. Here is what each season offers:
Fall (September–November): Peak foliage, golden afternoon light, the most popular season for CT family sessions. Fall slots fill by August — book early.
Spring (April–June): Fresh green growth, cherry blossoms, wildflowers, and beautiful soft light. A wonderful and underrated season for family sessions.
Summer (June–August): Lush landscapes, long evenings with warm golden light until 8 PM. Beach and shoreline sessions are spectacular in summer.
Winter (December–February): Quiet, dramatic, and completely different. The Studio at 100 in North Haven is a beautiful option for winter family sessions when outdoor conditions are unpredictable.
Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden is one of my most-used family session locations. The trail system offers wooded paths, open ridgelines, and fall foliage that is genuinely extraordinary in October. It is versatile enough to work for families of all sizes and styles, and it is conveniently located near North Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, and Cheshire.
East Rock Park in New Haven offers elevated views, open meadows, and a stunning April display of cherry blossoms on the main road through the park. It is a large, diverse location that can accommodate families who want dramatic scenery and families who want something quieter and more intimate.
The Connecticut shoreline is one of the most requested family session settings I work in. Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Chaffinch Island in Guilford, and the rocky coastline near Branford all offer a completely different look — open, bright, and joyful — from the wooded CT locations.
Shoreline sessions work especially well for families with young kids who love the water, or for families who want the energy and openness of a coastal setting. I photograph shoreline sessions in late spring, summer, and early fall when the light is warmest and the beaches are at their best.
Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford, CT is one of Connecticut’s most beautiful and underutilized family session locations. The vineyard rows, open fields, and sunset views create a completely different aesthetic from a state park — warm, golden, and romantic in the best way. It works especially well for families who want something a little unexpected in their gallery.
The Studio at 100 at 100 Broadway in North Haven is available for indoor family sessions when the weather is not cooperating or when families simply prefer a controlled setting. The studio’s natural light and relaxed atmosphere work beautifully for smaller families and for newborn-sibling sessions, holiday minis, and winter sessions.
One of the things I love most about family photography is the long-term relationships it creates. Samantha Gerakelis has been photographing with me for over five years. In her words: “We’ve been working with Nicole for over five years, and every year she continues to capture our family…”
Watching a family grow through photographs over years — kids who were toddlers in early sessions who are now school-aged, babies who arrived mid-relationship — is one of the great privileges of this work. When families come back to me year after year, it tells me something that no award can: that the photographs we made together actually mattered to them.
In 2020, when the world went quiet, I photographed my North Haven neighbors from their front porches. No studio, no planned outfits, no location scouting — just families in the real spaces of their everyday lives. It became a three-part blog series and one of the most meaningful projects of my career.
I mention it because it shaped something I already believed: the most important photographs are not the most polished ones. They are the ones that are true.
I do not work through a posing checklist. I move with you, I respond to what is happening, and I capture what is real. If the toddler is done, we redirect. If the dog photobombs, we keep shooting. If the parents get lost in a conversation and forget I am there — those are often the best frames of the entire session.
I have photographed in more Connecticut locations than I can count — state parks, vineyards, beaches, town greens, farms, and everything in between. When a family asks me where to shoot, I do not hand them a generic list. I ask them questions about what they love, what their kids love, and what feeling they want in their photographs — and then I match that to the right location.
My goal at every family session is not to take great photographs for one year. It is to become your family’s photographer — the person who documents the full arc of this season of your life, from babies to big kids, from young couples to the family you build together over decades.
Many of my longest-term clients started with a single session and came back every year after that. I would love for that to be your story too.
I am based in North Haven and photograph families throughout New Haven County — North Haven, New Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, Cheshire, East Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Milford, and West Haven. These are the towns I know best, and where my favorite location recommendations are.
I also serve families across Hartford County — West Hartford, Glastonbury, Simsbury, Wethersfield — and Fairfield County — Greenwich, Westport, Fairfield, Darien, Norwalk, Stamford. Travel to beautiful locations statewide is part of every family session offering.
Nicole Mele photographs families using a lifestyle-first approach — no stiff posing, no matching outfit requirements, and no counting to three. She creates the conditions for real moments to happen and captures them as they do. As a wife and mom herself, she brings genuine understanding of what real family life looks like — and real photographs that reflect it.
Every season in Connecticut offers something different. Fall is the most popular for foliage and golden light (book by August). Spring offers cherry blossoms and fresh green landscapes. Summer is ideal for shoreline and outdoor sessions with long evenings. Winter sessions at The Studio at 100 are a beautiful and underrated option for families who want a relaxed indoor look.
Nicole photographs family sessions at Sleeping Giant State Park (Hamden), East Rock Park (New Haven), the CT shoreline (Madison, Branford, Milford), Gouveia Vineyards (Wallingford), Harkness Memorial State Park, and dozens of other CT locations. She also offers indoor sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven. Sessions are available statewide.
Most family sessions run 60 to 90 minutes — enough time for the full family together, individual portraits of each member, sibling groupings, and parent portraits. Nicole recommends arriving at the location a few minutes early to let kids explore and settle in before the session starts.
Contact Nicole at nicolemelephotography.com/contact with your preferred season or date, your family size, and any location preferences. She will check availability and respond with session options. Spring and fall slots fill quickly — book as early as you can for peak seasons.
Yes — Nicole photographs extended family sessions including grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and multi-family groups. Larger extended family sessions typically run 90 minutes or more and are scheduled for locations that can comfortably accommodate bigger groups.
Your family is not a social media grid. It is loud and real and beautiful, and it deserves photographs that show it.
