I believe in the beauty of natural settings, which is why I often shoot in the comfort of your own home or amidst the serene outdoors. Let’s embark on this journey together.

I can’t wait to hear from you! I’m here to create timeless, high-quality photos that capture your story
Nicole Mele is among Connecticut’s best newborn photographers, offering slow, gentle, baby-led sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven, CT and in-home newborn sessions anywhere in Connecticut. Sessions are designed for babies in the first two to three weeks of life and include time for parents, siblings, and family portraits alongside the newborn.
The details you are afraid of forgetting — those tiny fingers, that specific smell, the way they curl up — those are what I photograph. Gently and without rushing.
Newborn sessions exist because of one simple truth: this stage passes faster than any other. The first weeks of a baby’s life are so full, so overwhelming, and so impossibly short. Families who document them have something they will treasure forever. Families who do not — and I say this gently, because I have heard it dozens of times — often wish they had.
The photographs from a newborn session are not just baby portraits. They are evidence of who you were as a family in those very first days. The size of the baby against your chest. The look on your partner’s face. Your older child meeting their sibling for the first time. Those images carry weight that increases every year.
As I say about every newborn session: “Newborn sessions are slow, gentle, and entirely baby-led, capturing the delicate details you never want to forget.” That is not a formula. That is how I work, without exception.
Every baby is different. Some are sleepy and settle easily into wrapped poses. Some are more alert and interested in looking around. Some need a lot of feeding time before they are comfortable. Some need the temperature turned up before they relax.
I follow the baby’s lead completely. I never rush a newborn session. I never try to pose a baby into a position they are not comfortable in. The session takes as long as it takes — typically two to four hours — and we move at the pace that the baby sets.
That flexibility is not just kindness. It is what produces the best photographs. A baby who is warm, fed, and comfortable looks completely different in a photograph from a baby who is being managed on a schedule.
The Studio at 100 at 100 Broadway in North Haven, CT is purpose-built for newborn sessions. The studio is warm, quiet, and private — no outside noise, no interruptions. I control the temperature to keep the baby comfortable throughout the session. Natural light fills the space with the soft, warm quality that is perfect for newborn portraits.
The studio is stocked with wraps, props, and backgrounds in neutral, natural tones — nothing trendy, nothing that will look dated in five years. Everything is chosen to make the baby the focus of every frame.
Free parking is available at the studio. Families are welcome to bring snacks, a nursing pillow, or anything else that makes the session comfortable for mom.
Many families prefer the comfort and familiarity of their own home for newborn sessions — and the in-home option produces something the studio simply cannot replicate: the actual context of your baby’s first days.
A nursery full of thoughtfully chosen details. The chair where you have been nursing at 2 AM. The dog who has not quite figured out what just happened. Your older child in their own space with their new sibling. These are home photographs — and they carry a quality of realness and intimacy that studio sessions cannot fully recreate.
I photograph in-home newborn sessions throughout Connecticut — New Haven, Hartford, Fairfield, Wallingford, and across the state. I bring everything needed for a complete session directly to you.
Newborn portrait sessions include both posed and natural lifestyle images of the baby. Posed work includes wrapped portraits, basket or prop setups when appropriate, and close-detail shots — hands, feet, eyelashes, the specific curl of a baby at this exact stage.
Natural lifestyle images capture the baby as they are — sleeping on a blanket, being held by a parent, lying on a bed surrounded by the warmth of the room. These images are less structured but often the most emotional in the gallery.
No newborn session is complete without photographs of the family meeting this baby. Parent portraits — holding the newborn skin-to-skin, looking down, lost in the specific awe of those first days — are among the most meaningful images I make.
Sibling photographs are a specialty. Getting an older child into a genuine moment with a newborn sibling requires patience, flexibility, and a willingness to let the older child lead the interaction rather than forcing a pose. I have photographed hundreds of these moments. They are some of my favorites.
Grandparents, aunts and uncles, and extended family can also be included in a newborn session — just let me know when booking so I can plan the session timing accordingly.
The ideal time for a newborn session is days 5 to 14 after birth. Babies in this window are typically the sleepiest and most comfortable being handled and gently posed. They have the delicate, curled-up quality that defines this stage.
After about three weeks, babies become more alert, less flexible in their positioning, and harder to settle into the wrapped poses that are characteristic of newborn work. Sessions with slightly older babies (3–6 weeks) can still be beautiful, but the look and feel of the session shifts.
I recommend booking your newborn session during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. I hold a tentative spot based on your due date and confirm the actual session date once the baby arrives. No deposit is typically required until after the baby is born — I understand that babies come on their own timeline.
The most common thing I hear from parents who call me after their baby is born: “I wish I had booked earlier.” Newborn sessions have a narrow window — days 5 to 14 — and if you wait until after the baby arrives to start looking for a photographer, those ideal first days pass before you can get on the calendar.
I recommend reaching out as early as your second trimester. I will hold a spot based on your due date, and we will confirm the session date once your baby is born and you know their arrival day. This way, your spot is secured and you are not scrambling in those exhausted early days.
Newborn sessions run two to four hours. Feed your baby right before you arrive (or right before I arrive, for in-home sessions) — a well-fed baby settles faster and sleeps more easily during the session.
Bring anything that makes the session comfortable for you: a nursing cover, snacks, a change of clothes for the baby, anything your older child will need if they are attending. I do not rush the session, so there is no need to feel like you are on a clock.
Parents do not need to worry about clothing — you will likely spend most of the session holding your baby, so comfortable, simple clothing in soft colors works perfectly. I will send a full preparation guide before every newborn session with all the specific details.
Many families photograph both a maternity session and a newborn session with me. Together, these two sessions tell a complete story — the waiting, the anticipation, the before and after of your family expanding. Families who do both end up with a visual record of one of the most significant chapters in their lives.
I offer a simple process for booking both: photograph the maternity session in the third trimester, then confirm the newborn session once the baby arrives. No complicated packages required — just a natural continuation of the same story.
The first year moves faster than any other. Many families choose to photograph milestone sessions — at three months, six months, nine months, and the first birthday — to capture how dramatically a baby changes in those twelve months. A gallery that moves from newborn through first birthday is one of the most meaningful collections of photographs I know how to create.
I photograph newborn sessions throughout New Haven County — North Haven, New Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, Cheshire, East Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Milford, and West Haven. The Studio at 100 in North Haven is the hub, but I travel anywhere in the county for in-home sessions.
I serve newborn clients across Hartford County and Fairfield County with in-home sessions anywhere in those regions. Travel to your home is always available — you should not have to go anywhere in those first weeks.
Book during your second or third trimester — ideally before 32 weeks. Nicole holds a spot based on your due date and confirms the session date once your baby arrives. The ideal session window is days 5 to 14 after birth, so having a tentative spot reserved before the baby arrives is essential to capturing that early newborn stage.
Studio newborn sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven offer a controlled environment — consistent lighting, controlled temperature, full access to wraps and props. In-home sessions trade studio control for the authentic context of your baby’s first days — the nursery, the family home, the specific warmth of your own space. Both options are available, and both produce beautiful, meaningful images.
Newborn sessions with Nicole typically run two to four hours. Sessions are baby-led — they take as long as the baby needs. There is no rush, no schedule to keep. Feeding breaks, settling time, and family portrait segments are all built into that window.
Yes. Sibling portraits are a specialty — Nicole is experienced at creating genuine moments between new babies and older children without forcing uncomfortable poses. Grandparents and extended family are also welcome. Just let Nicole know when booking so she can plan the session timeline.
Look for a photographer who is genuinely baby-led — who will never rush a newborn or force uncomfortable poses. Look at galleries to see whether the images feel warm and real or clinical and posed. And look for someone who photographs the full family, not just the baby — because the most meaningful newborn images often include the parents and siblings as much as the newborn.
These are the details you will want to remember forever. Let me help you keep them.
