I believe in the beauty of natural settings, which is why I often shoot in the comfort of your own home or amidst the serene outdoors. Let’s embark on this journey together.

I can’t wait to hear from you! I’m here to create timeless, high-quality photos that capture your story
Nicole Mele is among Connecticut’s best maternity photographers, creating warm, intimate maternity portraits at The Studio at 100 in North Haven and at Connecticut’s most beautiful outdoor locations — from the shoreline to open fields and state parks. Maternity sessions are recommended in the third trimester, between 28 and 36 weeks, and are available for solo sessions, couples, and sessions that include older children and family.
This season is fleeting. It deserves photographs that are as beautiful as it feels.
Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary things a human body does. It is also one of the most temporary. The bump that feels enormous right now — the one you cannot imagine forgetting — will be gone before the year is out, replaced by a baby who needs holding and feeding and watching grow.
Maternity portraits are not vanity. They are preservation. They are the record of what this season looked like — your body, your face, the specific joy and anticipation of the weeks before everything changed. They are the photographs your child will someday look at and understand something about the love that was already there before they arrived.
As I say about every maternity session: “My maternity sessions are a tribute to the strength of your body and the soft anticipation of a new life.” I mean that completely. These sessions are designed to celebrate you — not just your bump.
Maternity photography has a tendency toward two extremes: stiff, formal studio portraits that look like stock photos, or overly dramatic fine-art maternity work that does not look anything like the real person.
I do neither.
My maternity sessions are lifestyle-first. I want photographs that look like you — your relationship, your personality, the specific way you hold yourself at 32 weeks. I want to capture both the physical beauty of this stage and the emotional reality of it: the anticipation, the tenderness, the occasional exhaustion, the overwhelm of waiting for a person you already love.
Some of my favorite maternity images are the quiet ones. The ones where you are just standing in a field with your hand on your bump, looking somewhere outside the frame, completely lost in the reality of what is about to happen. Those images say more than any posed portrait.
A maternity session with me typically runs 60 to 90 minutes. We usually cover two to three settings — different lighting situations, different backdrops, different moods within the same location. I work quickly enough that you are never standing or walking for too long, and slowly enough that nothing feels rushed.
Every maternity session includes a mix of posed and lifestyle images. Posed: standing, seated, close detail shots of the bump, formal portrait setups. Lifestyle: movement, walking, genuine interactions with your partner or children, the in-between moments where the real expression lives.
By the end of the session, most clients tell me they expected it to feel more awkward than it did. That is always the goal — to make you forget you are being photographed.
I photograph maternity sessions for solo moms, couples, and families that include older children or other family members. Here is what works for each:
Solo maternity sessions are entirely focused on you and your bump — your strength, your beauty, this stage of your life. These sessions are intimate and personal, and they produce some of the most powerful maternity images I make.
Couples maternity sessions include your partner throughout the session — together, interacting, and separately. These are the photographs that capture the relationship in the specific context of becoming parents — or becoming parents again. They are full of genuine emotion.
Family maternity sessions include older children, siblings-to-be, and sometimes grandparents or extended family. Getting an older sibling to genuinely engage with the bump — to press an ear against it, to lean in, to look up at mom with curiosity — produces images that will matter to that child forever.
The ideal timing for a maternity session is between 28 and 36 weeks. In this window, the bump is clearly defined and beautifully round, and you are still comfortable moving and standing for an hour or so.
After 36 weeks, many women find sessions more physically demanding — not impossible, but less comfortable. Before 28 weeks, the bump may not be as photogenic as it will be in a few weeks. The sweet spot is right in the middle of the third trimester.
I recommend booking your maternity session no later than week 25 or 26. Maternity slots are limited, and the timing window is narrow enough that leaving booking too late can mean missing your ideal week.
Connecticut has some of the most photogenic outdoor settings in New England, and I use them constantly for maternity sessions. My most-used maternity locations:
Open fields and meadows — wide open, with the sky as backdrop. These settings create beautiful, emotional images — just you, the bump, and a lot of light. I know several beautiful meadow locations in New Haven and Hartford Counties that photograph extraordinarily well in every season.
The Connecticut Shoreline — coastal Connecticut at golden hour, with the light bouncing off the water behind you, is one of the most beautiful settings I shoot in. Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Silver Sands in Milford, and the rocky coastline near Branford all work beautifully for maternity sessions in late spring and early fall.
Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden — Sleeping Giant offers wooded trails and open ridgelines that work especially well for fall maternity sessions. The earthy, natural quality of the trails creates a timeless backdrop.
East Rock Park, New Haven — East Rock Park in New Haven offers elevated views and open meadows that are beautiful in spring and summer. The April cherry blossom display at East Rock is extraordinary for maternity sessions if your timing works out.
Harkness Memorial State Park — the grounds and formal gardens at Harkness in Waterford offer an elegant, distinctive backdrop that is very different from a typical state park setting. It is a longer drive from North Haven but absolutely worth it for the right couple.
The Studio at 100 at 100 Broadway in North Haven is a beautiful option for maternity sessions, particularly when the weather is uncertain, when the session is planned for winter, or when the expectant mother simply prefers the warmth and control of an indoor setting.
The studio’s natural light is soft and flattering. The neutral, warm atmosphere creates a calmer, more intimate feel than outdoor sessions. Many families choose to do a hybrid session: studio portraits first, then a short outdoor component at a nearby location. Both options work beautifully and I am happy to plan either.
Wardrobe matters in maternity photography. Here is what I recommend:
Flowy dresses and gowns photograph beautifully in outdoor settings — the movement in the fabric adds visual interest and the silhouette works perfectly with the bump. I have a small selection of maternity gowns available to borrow for outdoor sessions; ask when booking if you would like to use them.
Simple, form-fitting tops and skirts work well if you prefer a less formal look — especially for lifestyle-forward sessions and in-studio work.
Avoid busy patterns and logos. Solid colors and simple textures photograph much better against Connecticut’s outdoor backdrops. Soft neutrals — cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, warm grey — are classic for maternity sessions and look beautiful in all seasons.
I send a full maternity wardrobe guide before every session with specific suggestions based on the location and time of year.
Many families photograph a maternity session and a newborn session together as a paired series — the before and after, the waiting and the arrival. Together, these two sessions tell a complete story of one of the most significant chapters in a family’s life.
I make this easy to plan: photograph the maternity session in the third trimester, and when the baby arrives, confirm your newborn session within the first two weeks. The process is simple, the timeline is natural, and the resulting gallery — bump-to-baby — is one of the most meaningful collections of photographs I know how to create.
I photograph Connecticut families across every major milestone: maternity, newborn, first-year milestones, family sessions, senior portraits, and beyond. The families I love most are the ones I have documented over years — watching children grow from bump to school-age, watching couples become parents, watching families expand and evolve.
That continuity is possible because I build real relationships with the families I photograph. My goal at every maternity session is not just beautiful photographs. It is to become the photographer your family comes back to.
Nicole recommends scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 36 weeks — the sweet spot when the bump is beautifully defined and you are still comfortable for an hour-long outdoor or indoor session. Book by week 25 or 26 to secure your ideal timing and location. Sessions are available year-round at both indoor and outdoor Connecticut locations.
Nicole recommends flowy dresses or gowns for outdoor sessions and simple, form-fitting pieces for a more lifestyle look. She has a small selection of maternity gowns available to borrow. Solid colors and soft neutrals — cream, blush, sage, dusty blue — photograph beautifully against Connecticut’s landscapes. She sends a full wardrobe guide before every session.
Yes. Nicole photographs solo maternity sessions, couples sessions, and full family maternity sessions that include older siblings, grandparents, or anyone else who is part of this chapter. Including older children often creates some of the most emotional images in the gallery — siblings connecting with a bump they cannot yet fully understand.
Studio sessions at The Studio at 100 in North Haven offer consistent, controlled natural light and a calm, intimate environment — ideal for winter, uncertain weather, or mothers who prefer the warmth and privacy of an indoor setting. Outdoor sessions use Connecticut’s landscapes as backdrops — fields, shoreline, state parks — for a more open, seasonal look. Many clients choose to combine both in a single session.
Yes. Many Connecticut families book both as a natural pair — maternity in the third trimester, newborn in the first two weeks after birth. Together, they create a complete visual record of the transition from before to after. Contact Nicole to discuss booking both sessions and how to plan the timing.
You are in the middle of something extraordinary. It deserves to be remembered.
